Backstory:
Sanji was Zeff's protégé and sous-chef, and the two had a long history together. Nine years earlier, Zeff (who was a pirate at the time) attacked the ship
that Sanji was working on as a cook; however, both ships were caught in a sudden storm, and both sank. Zeff managed to save the young Sanji from drowning and
the two were washed onto a rock outcropping, high above the sea. Despite their good fortune, there was little food for them: a few rations had washed onto the
rock with them, but there was no vegetation, no animals, and no way to reach the water to fish. Splitting up what little rations remained, Zeff ordered Sanji
to sit at the other end of the island, and look for a ship. Sanji protested that Zeff was keeping a large sack for himself, but Zeff brushed him off, saying
that as an adult, his stomach was bigger. Days passed. Sanji had no more food, but there was still no sign of a ship. Many weeks afterward (the exact amount of
time differs between the manga and anime), an emaciated Sanji decided to take a chance, and kill the old man for his food. He did not kill Zeff, however: when
he slashed open the old man's sack in a fit of rage, he discovered that there was no food inside, only treasure. To his horror, he realized that Zeff had
eaten his own leg to survive (in the anime, he lost it while saving Sanji after becoming entangled in one of the wrecked ships, and simply ate nothing).
Wracked with guilt, Sanji agreed that if they were rescued, he would help Zeff build a restaurant on the water, so that those at sea would not have to go
hungry. Soon after, a ship appeared, and they were spared from death.
Attack Style:
Sanji has mastered the martial art of Red Leg (a fictional martial art that takes some inspiration from the Brazillian martial art Capoeira) that the pirate Zeff apparently taught him. All of his maneuvers come from his legs and feet. His legs and feet are extremely powerful, able to smash boulders and defeat creatures much larger than himself (like bananadiles and Mo-Moo). His legs also imbue him with surperior speed and agility, able to leap and run much farther than normal humans. He has stated that the reason he fights with his feet is that he doesn't want to risk damaging his hands as he needs them to cook.
As for his actual "attacks" Sanji has a very large number of specific kicks and techniques he uses to fight with. It should be noted that he doesn't call out an attack name whenever he kicks someone or something, but for important events and fights he usually will. Most of his attacks are said in French and are usually cooking/food terms related in some way to the specific portion of the opponent's body that he's targeting or to the nature of the attack itself. In the English anime, the attacks are changed to be funny sounding, non-existent food items that have something to do with the target area of the attack.
Common attacks are Mutton Shoot(Sanji jumps and flips, and kicks with all his might into the foe's mid-region or head) and Anti-Manner Kick Course(One of Sanji's most powerful kicks where he delivers an 180 degree vertical kick upward into a giant foe's torso or back).
In the Enies Lobby arc, Sanji reveals a new ability - the power to heat his shoes to a temperature so high they glow bright red, by spinning rapidly in place. The kicks used when his feet are ignited all have the word Devil preceding the food attacks (ex; Devil Flambe). The heat is so high that less than a second of contact would set a person aflame; this renders tekkai, the hardening of muscles to cushion damage, totally useless. Sanji used this ability during his fight with Jyabura, in which his attacks were previously barely even hurting him due to his active usage of tekkai. Fans are speculating that this move was what gave Zeff the nickname "Red Leg". The truth in this explanation is, however, not confirmed and is purely fan speculation. Interestingly enough, Wanze of CP7 was able to set his feet on fire using friction, which Sanji observed.
Attack List.
On rare occasion, Sanji will use items like guns or kitchen knives to fight. At one occasion, Sanji points a gun at Miss All-Sunday (Nico Robin) during the escape from Whiskey Peak (One of the first of seven islands upon entering the Grand Line). Another occasion, when Sanji fought a CP7 chef, Sanji used kitchen knives to remove Wanze's battle suit but did not cut him. As he was in a a kitchen as well as fighting food, he had an excuse for using knives. Instead of letting the ramen fall to the floor he put them into plates and stacked them on the kitchen counters.
- Devil Wind Sanji spins around rapidly with one leg still on the ground. His rapid movement causes his shoe to become hot and burning. This is currently his newest and most powerful move and goes away within a minute or so.
- Collier Shoot (Neck Shoot) Sanji jumps high into the air and lands a powerful kick to the opponent's neck. "Collier" is the French term for neck meat. In the English Dub this attack's name is "Trachea Turnover Surprise" and in the English manga it's called "Collier Coup".
- Collier (Neck) Another kick to the neck but this time Sanji does it whilest still on the ground. "Collier" is the French term for neck meat. In the English Dub this attack's name is "Trachea Turnover".
- Epaulé (Shoulder) A downward kick targeting the opponent's shoulder, meant to knock them off balance or drive them into the ground. "Epaule" is the French term for shoulder meat. In the English Dub this attack's name is "Clavicle Schnitzel Kick Off".
- Cotelette (Rib Chop) Dropping down into a one-handed handstand position, Sanji kicks the opponent hard in the ribs, this attack is usually followed by Selle. "Cotelette" is the French term for rib meat. This attack was edited out of the English version and thus has no "English" name yet.
- Sellé (Lower Back) Commonly used as a combo attack with Cotelette, using the momentum from the Cotelette attack Sanji (still in a handstand) spins around in the opposite direction to deliver a fast kick to the opponent's lower back or Lumbar region. "Selle" is the French term for lower back meat. This attack was also edited out of the English version and thus has no "English" name yet.
- Poitrine (Breast) A stabbing kick straight into the opponent's chest. "Poi Trene" is the French term for breast meat. In the English Dub this attack's name is "Barbequed Rib Buster".
- Gigot (Legs) Running at the opponent Sanji delivers a sweeping kick to the knee caps, the opponent is either send flying or slammed to the ground as a result. "Gigot" is the French term for leg meat. In the English Dub this attack's name is "Shish kabob Back Smash".
- Mouton Shot One of Sanji's strongest single kicks, and a common finishing move. He starts by jumping or fliping into the air and then channels all his might into one leg to deliver a kick to the opponent's mid-section, or sometimes their head, that sends them flying. "Mouton" is the cooking term that refers to cooked lamb meat. In the English Dub this attack's name is "Leg of Lamb Drumstick Supreme" and in the English Manga, it is named "Mouton Mallet".
- Poitrine Shoot (Breast Shoot) A stronger version of Poi Trene only this time Sanji aims alittle higher and kicks upward not downward. "Poi Trene" is the French term for breast meat.
- Reception Sanji lifts one of his legs up high and hooks his foot around the opponent's neck, then uses that leg to smash the opponent's face into the ground hard. This attack's not named after anything food related, but after the "reception" that one gets when entering a restaurant. In the English Dub the attack is called Open-face Slamwich.
- Armée de L'air Gomu Shoot (Air Force Rubber Shoot) Combo attack with Luffy, first Luffy stretches and grabs Sanji's leg. Then, as Sanji kicks forward, Luffy uses his Gomu Gomu no Rocket attack, propelling him forward and higher speeds than normal. In the English Dub this attack's name is Taffy Trouncer.
- Flanchet Shoot (Stomach Shoot) Sanji kicks the opponent with a head on snap kick. "Flanchet" is French for "stomach." In the English Dub this attack is called Gut Stuffer.
- Anti-Manner Kick Course Thought to be Sanji's strongest single kick attack, he only uses it when he's really, really mad. He gathers all the power he can muster and delivers a massive vertical kick by lifting one of his legs a full 180 degrees in the air. This attack is aimed at the very center of the opponent's torso (front or back) and is almost always enough to defeat any opponent with one shot.
- Joue Shoot (Cheek Shoot) Sanji leans forward and delivers a hard side kick to one of the opponent's cheeks. "Joue" is French for "cheek."
- Basses Cottes (Mid-ribs) A mid-air attack, Sanji kicks one leg straight forward to attack the opponent while kicking the other one backwards to provide the nessicary momentum.
- Longé (Hip) A sweeping kick, usually performed from the back targeting the opponent's hips, very useful for sending an opponent flying in preparation for another kick.
- Tendron (Collar) A straight on side kick targeting the middle area of the opponent's collar bone.
- Quasi (Rump) Sanji flips over into a double-handed handstand, spins around and kicks the opponent's ass, literally. This attack is usually followed by Queue.
- Queue (Tail) Commonly used as a combo attack with Quasi, Sanji continues spinning with the momentum from Quasi Sanji swings his other leg around to kick the opponent's tail bone.
- Jarret (Shank) Often used right before or after Cuisseau, Sanji sends a hard kick to the opponent's shin. This can be used to attack or block an incoming kick as he did against Bon Clay.
- Cuisseau (Thigh) Often used right before or after Jarret, Sanji sends a hard kick to the opponent's thigh. This can be used to attack or block an incoming kick as he did against Bon Clay.
- Flanchet (Stomach) A simple kick to the opponent's stomach.
- Veal Shoot Another one of Sanji's strongest/finisher attacks, leaps into the air and sweeps his leg forward to land a powerful kick to the center of the opponent's torso.
- Concasse (Crush) Another finisher, Sanji leaps high into the air and starts flipping over rapidly to gain speed, then he brings the heel of his foot down on the opponent's head killing them instantly, or at least knocking them out for a really long time. "Concasser" is French for the process of tenderizing meat by pounding it.
- Troiseme Haché (Triple Dice) Sanji does a series of backflips towards his opponent before using his hands for one final push to launch him towards and opponent's face where he delivers several fast kicks.
- Bouquetier Shoot (Mixed Vegetables Shoot) Often used as the final blow in a series of attacks, Sanji lands on his hands underneath an opponent's chin, then uses both hands to spring upwards to deliver a blow to the opponent's chin with both feet.
- Slice Shoot A disarming attack where Sanji runs forward, jumps into the air and kicks the opponent's hand to do damage and knock a weapon from their hand.
- Party Table Kick Course An attack for fighting against large groups, Sanji jumps into the air and lands on the head of one of the opponents in a hand stand. He then spins around rapidly to deliver a savage kick to the face of anyone within range. After he runs out of targets the dismounts and kicks the person he was spinning on.
- Brochette Sanji jumps over the top of his opponent and aims one leg directly downwards towards the opponent. He then drops downwards while spinning like a drill to spear his opponent with his extended leg. A "Brochette" is a French shish kabob type skewer that has many uses.
- Collier Flip (Neck Flip) An attack for defeating two opponents simultaneously. Sanji drops into a handstand and kicks each of the two opponents in the neck at the same time. He then uses his hands to launch himself upwards and spin around at the same time, this sends his opponents flying into the air while spinning wildly. He once used it while on the Sea Train "Puffing Tom" to embed two elite Government Officers into the Puffing Tom's roof. "Collier" is the French term for neck meat.
- Frites Assorties (Fried Assortment) An attack for use against several opponents, Sanji drops into a handstand then delivers a series of upward kicks to knock any nearby opponent's skyward.
- Escalope A jumping kick to the forehead. "Escalope" is a French cooking term for a thin boneless piece of meat, in this case Sanji's referring to the extremely thin flesh covering the skull. Escalopé could also be a mistranslation/ citation of the word scalp, the aforementioned skin.
- Epauchage An attack used against Wanze of CP7 (see CP9 for more on him), Sanji uses a pair of kitchen knives to peel away an opponent's armor. This is the only time Sanji has made an exception to his rule of never using knives or his hands in a fight but this was a very special case since Wanze's armor was made of food (ramen to be exact) and they were fighting in a kitchen. "Epauchage" is a French cooking verb which means "to peel away skin."
- Oeil (Eye) A straight on kick to the opponent's eyes.
- Nez (Nose) A straight on kick to the opponent's nose.
- Joue (Cheek) A straight on kick to the opponent's cheek.
- Bouche (Mouth) A straight on kick to the opponent's upper jaw, this attack targets the roof of their mouth, and thus can only be done when the opponent's mouth is open.
- Dents (Teeth) A straight on kick to the opponent's teeth, Sanji hits both the upper and lower sets of teeth at the same time, and thus he can only use his attack when the opponent's mouth is closed.
- Menton (Chin) A straight on kick to the opponent's lower jaw/chin.
- Parage Shoot Sanji delivers a barrage of kicks to every single section of the opponent's face, these kicks are so powerful that they can alter the bone structure of the unlucky recepiant. "Parage" is a French cooking verb which means "to trim," it can also refer to a special method of peeling a had of lettuce or cabbage carefully to preserve the tender leaves at its core.
- San Point Decoupage (Three Point Decoupage) Sanji throws a powerful roundhouse kick to the opponent's mid-section, striking them with the entire length of his leg. "Decoupage" is a French cooking verb which means "to cut up."
- Concassé Sanji does a one handed handstand then spins around rapidly to gain speed. When he reaches a fast enough speed he extends one of his legs in order to send a hard kick to the opponent's side with his heel. 'Concassé' is the French term for the process of peeling, seeding and chopping tomatoes.
- Shishinabe Shoot (Boar Hot Pot Shoot) Sanji attacks with a powerful flying sidekick, he also uses this attack to break down walls.
